Winning the War on Truth - Part 02

All-out war has been declared against truth. If we are going to win this war - and the stakes couldn’t be higher - then we need to know that there is a war and what we are fighting against. In Part 01 , we learned about the enemies of truth, which come in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and colours. This includes words and phrases like spin, disinformation, misinformation, post-truth, double-speak, smoke and mirrors , and gaslighting . To this infamous list we add a few more items in the vocabulary of deception: Mendacity: Another word for untruthfulness and lying, particularly as a regular part of daily living. Half-truth: An interesting and deadly variant of the virus of lies. One could be telling a story that is technically factual but the goal is not to shed light but to obscure it. ‘Tell-all’ biographies can fit this description. They may actually be telling ‘the truth’ but the question needs to be asked: Why are they telling this story at all? Is it for the public good? Does it bring...

Winning the War on Truth - Part 01

For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before — Jesus Christ in Matthew 24:24-25 Since we are in the last days (Hebrews 9:26; 1 John 2:18), prophetic awareness is a key to surviving and thriving. Study the pastoral epistles of 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus, and you will not only get great leadership tips but also principles of last day living. While there are several key signs we can focus upon, there is one sign that has immediate and practical ramifications. It has to do with the war on truth. This war is real and it is fierce. Israel, its place in the Bible, today’s world, and end-time prophecy, also hang in the balance. Why the C? Warring against truth is nothing new … it has been happening since the days of Eden. Yet, prophetically, what we are seeing today is a frontal assault in overdrive! It is not just that people are lying, mor...

The Ninth Commandment 03: Winning the battle for Truth

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour — Exodus 20:16 The ninth commandment is not just a prohibition against lying and false witness; it is a manifesto on truth itself. In order to win the battle for truth, we also need to compare it with the different aspects of falsehood have infiltrated our language, culture, and society at large today. So far, we learned about double-speak, spin, mendacity, and ‘smoke and mirrors.’ Here’s a few more tenets of falsehood: Half-truth: An interesting and deadly variant of the virus of lies. One could be telling a story that is technically factual but the spirit behind it is evil. With half-truths, presentation of ‘facts’ is not given to shed light, as truth does, but to obscure it. For example, ’tell-all biographies’ may actually be reporting ‘facts’ but the question needs to be asked: Why are they telling us these things? Is it for the public good? Does it bring accountability? Does it shed light? Will it make our society better? Or ...

Winning the Battle for Truth: The Ninth Commandment - Part 02

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour — Exodus 20:16 It is precious, Godly, wonderful and under great siege. What is its name? Truth. As we learned last time, the ninth commandment is a manifesto on truth, and yet it is more and more under siege as time goes on. One of the great battles of the ‘last days’ is for truth; for deceptive antichrist forces will seek to persuade people away from Christ and the gospel. Many will follow their lead, which only ends up in destruction. As we will learn, truth is under siege, it is worth the fight, and victory is possible. Yet, it takes decision, dedication, and perseverance to come to victory. First, let’s understand the nature of the battle.   Introducing Jezebel A deeper awareness of the spiritual stronghold of lies and deception comes by understanding ‘Jezebel.’ Yes, she was Ahab’s wicked queen in the 9th Century BC who murdered prophets, stole vineyards, and proselytised for Baal worship in Israel. Yet, in the 1st Centur...

Time for Truth: The Ninth Commandment - Part 01

Time for Truth: The Ninth Commandment - Part 01 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour — Exodus 20:16 It is as old as the Garden of Eden, familiar as weeds in the field, common as colds in the winter. Yet, it is also a great evil that has spread faster than Covid on a cruise ship. What is this pernicious thing? We know it as ‘bearing false witness’ or, in short, ‘lying.’ It is the subject of the ninth commandment. While the command seems to be narrow - abstaining from false witness - it actually applies to the entire gamut of the falsehood industry. The Bible has some very strong things to say when it comes to lying vs. truth. While it goes back to the beginning of human history, lying today has entered into an enlarged and dangerous phase. We live in a corrupt culture that rejects objective and absolute truth for ‘framing,’ ‘narrative,’ ‘perception,’ and ‘relativism.’ Postmodernism, which represents a radical form of relativism, rejects the certainty of...
