IMPEACHMENT & DONALD TRUMP: Was Christianity Today Right? Part 02

Just after the US House of Representatives impeachment vote against President Trump, and right before Christmas, Christianity Today (CT) , an evangelical magazine, and its outgoing editor Mark Galli, issued a scathing attack on Mr. Trump. In no uncertain terms, Galli said Mr. Trump should be removed from office because he was ‘profoundly immoral’ and ‘clearly guilty’ of the impeachments charges lodged against him by the US House. Part 02: Though President Trump was acquitted by the US Senate, this series is focusing on Christianity Today and their assertions, which they assiduously stand by. Apparently, the magazine gained 5,000 new subscribers, but lost 2,000. Does their editorial represent an evangelical drift to the left?   Franklin Graham, son of Billy Graham, rejected the editorial and its premise. He said that his father, who founded CT in 1956, would be disappointed at their stance today and dismissed them as a ‘liberal, left-wing’ publication. Graham said that ...

IMPEACHMENT & DONALD TRUMP: Was Christianity Today Right? Part 01

The editorial was blistering: President Trump must be removed from office. It came within a day of the US House Democrats voted to impeach the President. The piece could have been written by one of Trump’s many secular progressive opponents in politics or the media. Instead, it came from Christianity Today (from henceforth called CT) , an evangelical publication. Are the evangelicals who voted for Trump in the 2016 Presidential election, now turning against him? Or is CT a minority voice? In December 2019 Democrats in the US House of Representatives voted to impeach President Donald Trump on two counts: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. This move was totally predictable. Yet, what seemed to be unpredictable was that Christianity Today ’s (CT) outgoing editor Mark Galli wrote an editorial calling for the President to remove from office due to his ‘grossly immoral character.’ https://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2019/december-web-only/trump-should-be-removed-from-off...

IMPEACHMENT! What Is It? What’s Next?

Impeachment : We have been hearing this word since the election of Donald Trump as US President in November 2016. Now, it will become a reality. But what is it and what will happen next? Impeachment, by definition, is the laying of charges against a public official. The US Constitution gives a provision for the removal of a person from public office if they are rightly convicted of bribery, treason, and especially ‘high crimes and misdemeanours.’ Impeachment is initiated by the US House of Representatives. After approving articles of impeachment, the process goes to the US Senate, where a trial is held. If the 100 Senators vote in a 2/3 ’ s majority to convict the official, then he or she is removed from office. Impeachment is serious business; a safety valve for getting rid of overly corrupt leaders who imperil the nation. Never was it intended to be weaponised against political opponents and, like pepper, should be used sparingly. It has. Until now, since America...

2019: What Lies Ahead Part 02? Will President Trump Be Impeached?

2019: What Lies Ahead? Part 02 Impeachment of President Donald Trump? The word has been thrown around repeatedly during the last 20 years but especially come to the fore with the election of Donald Trump. Now with the incoming 116th Congress of January 2019, with the opposition Democratic Party taking the House of Representatives, talk of the impeachment of President Trump is ‘in the air.’ No sooner had freshmen (or women) representatives taken their oath of office than they were taking of impeachment. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (known as AOC), age 29 from New York, a female Hispanic socialist in the mould of Bernie Sanders, said the impeachment of President Trump was ‘a no brainer.’ Rep. Rashida Tlaib, a Palestinian Muslim from Michigan, gained international attention by vowing on her first day in office that her party was going to ‘impeach the mxxx fxxx.’ By the way, the Democrats have been talking about impeaching President Trump for the last two years. They even ...
