Good-bye, Ebenezer Scrooge: A Case for Christmas

Its name recognition is universal, and, until recently, so was its appeal. Who can resist a family dinner with roast turkey, bread dressing, Christmas pudding, and all the trimmings?   Or going into the living room, a warm fire roaring, hot chocolate topped with marshmallows or whipped cream in the mug, while gleeful children unwrap presents found under the Christmas tree?   Or listening to the public singing of Christmas carols, with those time-honoured verses, are still able to stir the soul? Yes, Christmas still evokes much enthusiasm throughout the world, and not just in the West. Asia goes crazy over Christmas, including places like Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and Japan.   Even in ‘laid-back’ Australia, where a few even refer to it as ‘Chrissie,’ Christmas is still a very popular day off. Aussies relish the big meal, the family gathering, and, if possible, a splash at the beach while throwing ‘ another shrimp on the barbie. ’ In his best-selling book, A Christmas...

Winning the Spiritual War

Winning the Spiritual War For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places - Ephesians 6:12 (ESV). It is as if we are living in a tumble clothes dryer that is in its final spin mode. Universities across the Western world have been battlefields with pro-Hamas protestors challenging their schools or, in some cases, taking over them. At Columbia University in New York City, there was a police pushback. The impression is that the upheaval has less to do with the Middle East conflict and more to do with a leftist revolution.   In addition, there is inflation, runaway government spending, serious wars in Ukraine and Israel, and a decided change in the world order. In other words, we are in a time of shaking and somehow God is involved in it. The Scripture teaches us that there will be a shaking in the last days. Haggai 2:6 and He...

UNDERSTAND THE TIMES: What to Watch

What to Watch And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do … - 1 Chronicles 12:32 First, let’s get straight to the point. Our world is in great flux, we live in prophetically significant times, and, more than ever, we need to understand God’s prophetic purposes. Related to this is the goal of ‘understanding the times’ - current events and trends. Here’s a couple of good reasons: 1.      Great Commission (Matthew 28:19; Acts 1:8): This is the only homework assignment Christ ever gave the Church; and there is no ‘Plan B.’ Since we are called to go into ‘all the world,’ it only makes sense that we know something about this world God called us to. It is our playground and harvest field. 2.      Divine Direction: From the above verse in 1 Chronicles 12, when you ‘ understand the times,’ not just what is happening, but why, then God will download to you what you need ...

Issues Facing the Church: A Common Act No One Talks About - Part 01

It is a most common practice that stretches back to millennia. Yet, when a high-profile television personality was caught doing it on Zoom - not realising the camera was still ‘On’ - he was sent home in disgrace to have some ‘personal time.’ Many people, including Christians, want to ask about this subject but are afraid to ask. How do we handle it from a Biblical perspective? The ‘subject’ is masturbation, also known as ‘self-stimulation.’ Before we address the issue itself, be assured that it will be handled in a pastoral manner. The goal is to help, not hurt nor condemn, people along the way. No doubt, some who read this article are engaged, casually or regularly, in this practice. It’s time to have a much needed chat. What are we to make of it? First, by definition, masturbation (from now on referred to as SS - ‘self-stimulation’) is ‘ stimulation of the genitals by hand for sexual pleasure ,’ in order to reach a climax - ejaculation or orgasm - without the involvement of t...

Attitude Towards Leaders: The Prayer for Trump Part 02

In our last edition, we saw how US President Donald Trump made an impromptu visit to McLean Bible Church in Vienna, Virginia, a suburb of Washington DC. He was at the church for only 11 minutes. He received prayer from the Senior Minister, Dr. David Platt, and then quietly left the church without making any public comments. The date of the prayer: 2 June 2019, was called a Day of Prayer for the President by Franklin Graham. Dr. Platt was in a ‘no-win’ situation. He received criticism within his church because some members were ‘hurt for a variety of valid reasons’ (his words) that he prayed for the Presidents. Outside the church, he was criticised for seeking to appease those who were upset. If ever there should be a refuge from the storm, a rehoboth from the Philistines, a cave of Adullam from murderous king Saul, it should be the church. Often times it is, but sometimes the political storms within can be as intense as in the halls of parliament. Was Dr. Platt rig...
