BEYOND COVID-19 Part 08: God’s Word - An Excellent Spirit

As if we hadn’t had enough of a roller coaster ride: Covid-19, lockdown, recession, riots, and electoral challenges in the US. Now there are more lockdowns imposed on key nations. As often said, when crisis hits, there can be two different responses: 1) It’s the end of the world OR 2) It’s the womb of opportunity. The good news is this: the choice is yours. The Word of the Lord To cross the divide from the end of the world to opportunity, it is not a matter of talent, resources, or connections. Your ultimate weapon, for better or worse, is attitude. The late Bob Gass had two wonderful quotes on this subject: ‘Circumstances will not hold you back; but your attitude will.’ ‘A bad attitude is like a flat tyre (tire); until you change it, you aren’t going anywhere.’ Your attitude can make the difference between being stranded in the valley bottom or standing on the mountaintop. Again, the choice is yours. In order to learn of the benefits of the right attitude, let’s tu...

Put God First: Why Study the Book of Haggai - Part 02 of 02

INTRODUCTION TO HAGGAI The Book of Haggai is only 38 verses, the second shortest prophecy after Obadiah, and one of three post-exilic prophetic books, along with Zechariah and Malachi. It was probably the first time Judah had a prophetic word since the exile to Babylon decades before. Yet, within its verses are powerful promises and prophetic insights. Having looked at key features of this prophetic book, we now focus on a summary and outline. SUMMARY OF HAGGAI After 70 years of Babylonian captivity, it was time for Judah to go home and the temple to be rebuilt. This was not just a wonderful gesture but a fulfilment of prophecy (Isaiah 45:1-3; Jeremiah 25:11-12; 29:10-14). Daniel’s great intercession of Chapter 9 was on this very theme of the return, though he himself did not go back home but remained in exile. Haggai and Zerubbabel were part of the very first of three returns in 536 BC. The foundation of the second temple was laid. Opposition from the Samaritans and ...

UNDERSTAND THE TIMES: What to Watch

What to Watch And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do … - 1 Chronicles 12:32 First, let’s get straight to the point. Our world is in great flux, we live in prophetically significant times, and, more than ever, we need to understand God’s prophetic purposes. Related to this is the goal of ‘understanding the times’ - current events and trends. Here’s a couple of good reasons: 1.      Great Commission (Matthew 28:19; Acts 1:8): This is the only homework assignment Christ ever gave the Church; and there is no ‘Plan B.’ Since we are called to go into ‘all the world,’ it only makes sense that we know something about this world God called us to. It is our playground and harvest field. 2.      Divine Direction: From the above verse in 1 Chronicles 12, when you ‘ understand the times,’ not just what is happening, but why, then God will download to you what you need ...

Say ‘No’ to Idolatry: The Second Commandment Part 02

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6 And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments — Exodus 20:4-6 In Part 01 of the 2nd Commandment, we learned that idolatry is very wrong. First, because it uses human reason to describe God on their terms; Second, idolatry leads to the worship of creation, rather than the creator. Third, it is a deficient and substandard form of worship. We now continue to outline the case that idolatry is ‘dead wrong.’ Fourth, idolatry makes God jealous. The Hebrew word for jealous is ken-a. This term applies to God and God alone. It means that God ha...

The Prophet from Babylon: Why Study the Book of Daniel PART 02

In Part 01, we were introduced to one of the most remarkable men in history: Daniel, the prophet from Babylon. His name means ‘God is my judge,’ and he is the author of the book that bears his name. He lived during the 6th Century BC, during the time of the 70 year captivity of Judah in Babylon. We learned that Jesus is ‘the stone cut out of the mountains without hands (2:34),’ the 4th man in the fiery furnace (3:25), and the Messiah (9:25). We now continue our survey of this priceless book. Theme of Daniel God’s purposes for the nation of Israel are revealed in Daniel, especially during the ‘Times of the Gentiles.’ Israel’s political restoration is foretold. The Book of Daniel also holds the keys for understanding the last days, particularly Nebuchadnezzar’s statue in Daniel 2 and the 70 week prophecy of Daniel 9. The book is predominantly written in Hebrew but chapters 2-7 are in Aramaic, thus making them intelligible for God’s purpose for the Gentiles. Our k...

The Prophet from Babylon: Why Study the Book of Daniel

PART 01 Introduction As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams — Daniel 1:17 A multi-metalled statue, a fiery furnace, a king goes mad and eats grass like an animal, a night in the lion’s den, these are some of the images that come to mind when we consider the Book of Daniel. Yet, it has value beyond memorable, faith-building Sunday school stories. For the Book of Daniel is a handbook for end-time prophecy, detailing the end of the ‘Times of the Gentiles’ and the ‘kingdoms of men,’ and the transition to the ‘Time of Messiah’ and of the ‘Kingdom of God.' Though the book is written in Hebrew for the sake of Israel and its future, Chapters 2-7 are in Aramaic, so that the Gentiles can also learn of God’s purpose for them, too. Daniel is considered the Old Testament twin of the Book of Revelation. For the sake of understanding God and His end-time plan, the Book of...
